What we learned from the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards

If you want to get a good idea of who could win big at the upcoming Oscars, then you should take a look at the results from the recent 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards. This awards show has proven to be a great indicator for Oscars success in the past, and so we took a quick look at who impressed the judges.

But what are the Screen Actor Guild Awards? Simply put, it’s another glittering Hollywood award ceremony that celebrates the work of TV and movies actors over the past year. This means that you don’t have to watch lots of boring awards for things like ‘best cinematography’, and can instead just see your favourite movie stars making their awards speeches.

Highlights from the 2019 SAG Awards

The 2019 SAG Awards always gets plenty of coverage in the media, and this year’s event was no different. We got to see glamorous celebs like Margot Robbie, Emily Blunt and Emma Stone wearing some fabulous dresses and there was no shortage of drama when the awards were announced.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards was the fact that it featured nominations for some of the more popular movies that sometimes get shunned by the often-snobby Oscars. This meant that arty films like Roma were ignored, and instead we got to enjoy big box offices successes like Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians getting nominations.

When you couple this with the fact that the SAG Awards also gives us chance to celebrate the best TV shows of the past year, it’s easy to see why it’s worth paying attention to. Plus any award show that gives a lifetime achievement award to Alan Alda clearly knows what it’s doing. So let’s have a look at who won big at the 2019 SAG Awards.

Black Panther wins big in Outstanding Performance by a Cast

Could 2019 be the first time that a comic book movie wins an Oscar? Judging by Black Panther’s success at the 2019 SAG Awards, it could be possible. The Marvel Comics blockbuster won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category and showed that action movies can impress the judges. It’s easy to be dismissive of comic book movies, but we have to admit that Black Panther managed to balance CGI mayhem with some pretty heavy themes.

Rami Malek’s Freddie Mercury wins best male actor

Few films were more divisive than Bohemian Rhapsody. Whilst the critics hated it, movie audiences loved this rock biopic. This is why it was great to see the SAG Awards give Rami Malek get the nod for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.

Glenn Close picks up outstanding female Actor award for The Wife

The Wife was one of the year’s most impressive dramas, and it made perfect sense for Glenn Close to get the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. Whilst the movie wasn’t a box office smash, it’s the kind of movie that the SAG Awards love and we can’t argue with Close’s performance.

Mahershala Ali wins best supporting male actor in Green Book

Mahershala Ali won an Oscar for 2016’s Moonlight, and it was great to see the star picking up a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. Ali got the award for his role in the comedy-drama, Green Book, and we can expect to see plenty more from this star in the future.

Emily Blunt gets best female actor in supporting role for A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place was one of the year’s scariest films, and Emily Blunt quite rightly received the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role. The starlet hasn’t won an Oscar yet, but 2019 could easily be her year.

Darren Criss wins outstanding performance by male actor in TV miniseries

We were all gripped by the awesome TV series, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. So it’s only fair that Darren Criss won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Miniseries, despite the star wearing a somewhat ill-judged bow tie.

Patricia Arquette gets best female actor in TV series

Escape At Dannemora was great TV mystery and Patricia Arquette held the whole thing together with her excellent performance as a prison worker. So it was nice to see Arquette win the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries to put alongside all of her other acting awards.

Jason Bateman wins best male for Ozark TV drama

Ozark has been a massive Netflix hit, and it was about time that Jason Bateman got an award for his hard work. The 50-year old picked up a well deserved prize for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series, and his co-stars Laura Linney and Julia Garner were unlucky not to receive awards too.

Sandra Oh gets outstanding TV drama performance by female for Killing Eve

Everybody knows that Killing Eve was one of the BBC’s best TV series in years. Sandra Oh was key to the series’ success and the Canadian star was worthy of the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.

This Is Us wins best performance by ensemble in drama series

The winner of the category Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series was the CBS hit, This Is Us. This was one of the great feelgood TV shows of the past year, and it was great to see stars like Eris Baker, Sterling K Brown and Justin Hartley get the attention they deserve.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel gets best comedy series award

The Amazon hit Marvelous Mrs Maisel was one of the best comedies of last year, and it’s no surprise seeing as it came from the writers of The Gilmore Girls. So what better way to celebrate the success than by picking up the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
